Most famous for the widely celebrated Secretariat statue (he was born and raised in VA) which is right at the corner of the college I will be going to next year (RMC) Jocelyn Russel makes wildlife sculptures.
She grew up in a family that hunts, and so she got to see wildlife anatomy first hand.
I really love the secretariat statue. I think that it is super cool that it toured around the country, I don’t think I have ever heard of a massive statue doing that before. I'm excited to be able to see the piece all the time next year when I am at college. I have seen the stable where secretariat was born and raised, and competed on that same property, so secretariat and his legacy have a special place in my heart.
She also made the Sargent Reckless monument, which was an iconic toy horse and novel of my childhood.
She starts her sculptures on a model scale (just like my favorite model horses!)
I also really like how Jocelyn Russel teams up with other artists (most notably Michael Dubail) to create her work, because having differently skilled artists work together creates some really cool pieces.
